Landscape Design in University Park, TX
University Park is a city of tree-lined streets, home to Southern Methodist University, with gardens that often have to make the most of a city lot. Blooming Colors Nursery & Landscape Design creates landscapes and outdoor living spaces for homes like these. Our in-house designers plan each project, and our own installation teams build it.
How far we are
Our garden center at 2221 Ira E. Woods Ave in Grapevine is roughly 23 miles from University Park City Hall: about a half-hour without traffic, longer at rush hour. That is farther than our nearby cities, and we do take on projects there. If you can visit, our 4-acre nursery is the best place to choose trees, shrubs and finishes in person.
University Park's parkway tree rules
University Park is a separate city from Highland Park, with its own code. In University Park, the property owner is responsible for keeping the trees in the parkway beside their home safe and healthy. That means pruning to keep 8 feet of clearance above the sidewalk and 14 feet above the curb, watering new trees, and avoiding pruning oak trees from February through June, when oak wilt is likely to spread. Planting a new parkway tree requires a parkway tree planting application with a $20 permit fee, a site plan, and a tree of at least 2-inch caliper that is not on the city's non-approved species list. Trees are not allowed in alley rights-of-way. We plan around these rules and help you choose a suitable parkway tree; please confirm current requirements with the City of University Park.
Plants for heavy clay
Dallas County's Blackland Prairie clays, such as Houston Black, drain very slowly and shrink and crack when dry. Our Texas Master Certified Nursery Professionals select plants proven to handle heavy clay, summer heat and sudden cold snaps. We pair them with efficient irrigation and drainage planning guided by our in-house Soil & Water Engineer from Texas A&M.
Outdoor rooms on a city lot
A well-planned backyard can hold a lot. We design and build patios with Certified Belgard hardscape products, pergolas, outdoor kitchens, fire pits, landscape lighting, and custom Desjoyaux concrete pools with a 10-year warranty.
