Landscape Design in Preston Hollow, Dallas

Preston Hollow was planned in the 1920s and 1930s as a district of country estates, with large lots, traditional architecture and long blocks shaded by hackberry, oak and pecan trees. Today it is a neighborhood within the City of Dallas, and many of its properties still have the scale and mature canopy of those early estates. Blooming Colors Nursery & Landscape Design designs and installs landscapes, custom Desjoyaux concrete pools and outdoor living spaces for homes like these.

The drive from Grapevine

Our nursery at 2221 Ira E. Woods Ave in Grapevine is roughly 22 miles from the Preston Road and Walnut Hill Lane area: about a half-hour without traffic, longer at peak times. That is a longer trip than our nearby cities. We take on Preston Hollow projects with that in mind, and you are welcome to visit our 4-acre garden center to choose trees, shrubs and fountains in person.

City of Dallas tree rules

Preston Hollow follows the City of Dallas's Article X Landscape and Tree Preservation rules. According to the City, a single-family lot under 2 acres generally does not need a tree removal permit for trees on the private lot. There are important exceptions. Trees in the parkway and alley are not exempt and need City approval. Lots of 2 acres or more are covered. And once a demolition permit is applied for, the lot is treated as vacant, so protected trees then require a permit. For estate lots and rebuilds, we plan around existing trees and confirm requirements with the City of Dallas arborist office before any removal.

Soil, water and plant choice

Much of Dallas County sits on Blackland Prairie clays such as Houston Black, which drain very slowly and shrink and crack when dry. Our Texas Master Certified Nursery Professionals choose plants suited to that clay, summer heat and sudden cold snaps. We add irrigation and drainage planning guided by our in-house Soil & Water Engineer from Texas A&M.

Estate-scale outdoor living

We design and build custom Desjoyaux concrete pools with pipeless salt water filtration and a 10-year warranty, pergolas in wood, steel or aluminum, outdoor kitchens, fireplaces, fire pits and landscape lighting, using Certified Belgard hardscape products. Our Estate Management service maintains the property afterward.
